The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Unicorn Centre in Middlesbrough, established in 1998 to provide riding, equine therapy, and volunteering opportunities for people with additional needs, announced its closure on 1 October due to increasing financial pressures. However, following a strong community response, the trustees are now exploring potential rescue proposals with support from FRP Advisory, staff, volunteers, and local supporters. The centre urgently requires immediate funding to continue operating and has relaunched its fundraising efforts online.
RDA UK’s chief executive Michael Bishop expressed deep concern about the centre’s challenges, emphasizing the significant impact its closure would have on the local disabled community. He highlighted that many equine charities face similar financial difficulties and confirmed that RDA UK is working closely with the Unicorn Centre trustees and local stakeholders to find sustainable solutions. The future of centres like the Unicorn is crucial for delivering therapeutic riding and equestrian activities that benefit disabled people across the UK.
