Although primarily known for rescuing dogs and cats, ROLDA frequently receives calls to help abandoned or injured horses and donkeys, animals often neglected in underprivileged Romanian rural communities. Many owners, unable or unwilling to care for aging or sick large animals that no longer work, resort to abandonment despite legal protections. These animals, overworked and mistreated, face suffering due to a lack of proper care and retirement options, as veterinary clinics and shelters are typically unequipped to house them.

To address this gap, ROLDA is establishing the PawzUp center, which will provide dedicated spaces for recovering horses and donkeys, offering them shelter and medical care rather than returning them to harmful conditions. While not a full sanctuary, this center aims to support these animals during recovery and potentially for life, helping to improve their welfare and offering a compassionate solution for communities struggling with large animal care. Supporting this initiative will aid ROLDA in extending their rescue mission beyond dogs and cats to include these vulnerable large animals.
