Patty Key, widow of the late prominent horse owner Robert Key, made a significant return to harness racing by purchasing Dejeuner, a yearling filly, for $1 million at the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale. This marked the highest price ever paid for a yearling filly at auction. Key, who operates Winning Key Farm, expressed her renewed passion for racing and breeding after a hiatus following her husband’s passing. She aims to rebuild her farm focusing on high-quality broodmares, particularly trotting fillies, and plans to race Dejeuner as part of this new chapter.
Meanwhile, the Hambletonian Society is considering future hosts for the prestigious Hambletonian race beyond its current contract with the Meadowlands, which runs through 2026 but whose renewal option was not exercised. Proposals for hosting the event starting in 2027 are being evaluated, opening the possibility for new venues. Additionally, The Meadows racetrack has resumed its fall racing schedule with special events planned, including a Pink Out night on October 10.
