Patterson Fire Department’s Horse Rescue Team Saves Clydesdale in Ancram

The Patterson Fire Department Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue Team in Putnam County has been called upon six times in 2023 and numerous times last year to assist in rescuing horses in distress in Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester counties. Their most recent rescue involved a three-year-old Clydesdale owned by “Momo & the Rescues” in Ancram, Columbia County, who had fallen in his pasture and was unable to get up for several hours.

Despite the cold temperatures, the team successfully assisted in lifting the 1,800-pound horse using a front-end loader and lift straps. The horse was then able to stand up and walk into a stall for additional medical treatment from a local veterinarian. The teamwork and efficiency of the rescuers were praised by Joey Nickischer, Putnam’s Technical Rescue Team commander, and George Wahlers, Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services Battalion 16 Coordinator.

The rescuers’ hard work, training, and dedication were highlighted as key factors in the successful rescue mission. The team’s ability to work together smoothly and efficiently in technical situations was commended, and the first responders were praised for their impressive level of expertise in handling large animal emergencies.
