A slow-moving coastal storm has caused significant flooding and dune damage along the South Jersey shore, particularly impacting Atlantic County. High tides led to road closures, including the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township, and flooding at several motels along the route. Emergency crews had to rescue six people and a dog from these inundated motels, despite prior evacuation warnings. Police Chief Fred Spano expressed frustration over repeated rescues, noting that some residents and motel owners ignored evacuation notices. Efforts to mitigate flooding previously led to the demolition of four motels in the area, but three still remain.
The storm is now moving out, with sunny and dry weather expected through the upcoming weekend. The flooding highlights ongoing challenges in the area, which has seen changes over the years including redevelopment and infrastructure improvements. The situation underscores the need for continued attention to flood mitigation and community safety in these vulnerable coastal zones.
