New research presented by the Rare Breed Survival Trust (RBST) highlights the current state and future prospects of the UK’s native horse and pony breeds. Funded by the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB), the study surveyed nearly 400 breeders, revealing that most operate on a small scale with conservation-focused motivations rather than commercial ones. While there is robust market demand—especially for breeds with practical uses like riding, driving, and conservation grazing—breeders face challenges such as limited access to artificial insemination (AI), stallions, and mentoring. The findings emphasize the need for better promotion, genetic management, and welfare education to support breed sustainability.
The RBST stresses that native breeds, despite their unique traits and heritage, remain vulnerable and require targeted conservation efforts. The project also identified gaps in equine welfare knowledge and inconsistent management practices, calling for improved, accessible welfare education and coordinated industry efforts to counter misinformation. With enhanced support and collaboration among breeders, welfare bodies, and equine organizations, the research aims to strengthen the long-term sustainability and visibility of the UK’s irreplaceable native horse and pony breeds.
