The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office is reviving the mounted patrol in Cheyenne, Wyoming, aiming to blend traditional Western heritage with modern law enforcement. Sheriff Brian Kozak and his deputies recently completed a week-long training with their own horses, preparing them to patrol during major events like Cheyenne Frontier Days. The mounted patrol offers advantages such as elevated vantage points and effective crowd control, while also serving as a positive community outreach tool by making deputies more approachable to residents and visitors.
The horses were carefully trained to handle urban stimuli, with one horse disqualified for bucking during exercises. The mounted unit will be stationed near downtown Cheyenne, with horses housed conveniently close to event areas. Although the Cheyenne Police Department currently has no mounted riders, Kozak welcomes their future participation. The patrol will assist with parades, tourist engagement, service calls, and coordination with local police, reinstating a valued cultural tradition that reflects Cheyenne’s Western roots.
