Mor Spirit, Grade 1 Winner and Sire, Dies at 13 in South Korea

Mor Spirit, a successful racehorse and sire, died on January 2 at age 13, less than two months after being exported to South Korea. The son of Eskendereya, who was acquired by the Korea Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association and stood at Jeju Island, reportedly succumbed to colic, marking his second bout since arriving in Korea in November. Mor Spirit was bred in Pennsylvania by the Elkstone Group and had a notable racing career with multiple graded stakes wins, including the 2017 Metropolitan Handicap (G1), before retiring with earnings of over $1.6 million.

As a stallion, Mor Spirit stood at Spendthrift Farm and later Swifty Farms in Indiana, siring multiple stakes winners such as Velocitor and Chancheng Glory, the latter earning over $3 million racing in Hong Kong and Korea. His progeny have collectively won 423 races and earned nearly $15 million worldwide, establishing him as a respected sire before his untimely death shortly after his relocation to Korea.
