The Minister for Agriculture, Martin Heydon, has announced a record €6,434,803 in funding for 94 animal welfare charities across Ireland, marking the highest allocation ever under the Animal Welfare Grants Programme. Among the recipients is the Sathya Sai Sanctuary Trust in Castlebalwin, Sligo, which will receive €46,000. This funding supports organizations with proven success in rehoming animals, educating the public on animal welfare, and preventing future welfare issues.
Minister Heydon emphasized the government’s commitment to animal welfare and expressed gratitude to the staff and volunteers dedicated to animal care. Ahead of the Christmas season, he also urged the public to carefully consider the responsibilities of pet ownership and to acquire pets responsibly from reputable sources such as charities or trusted breeders.
