Mick Halford, a Group 1- and Royal Ascot-winning trainer, has announced his retirement before the start of the turf season. He has trained for 41 years and handled horses for esteemed owners such as the Aga Khan and Sheikh Mohammed. Halford expressed gratitude to his staff and owners and stated that it was the right time to retire due to declining numbers and his age.
Throughout his career, Halford has achieved many milestones, including over 1,200 winners across both codes and victories in top-level races. He established himself as a top trainer, finishing in the top 10 multiple times and producing classy horses like Platinum Warrior and Portage. His partnership with the Aga Khan and other owners has been a highlight of his career.
After separating from his wife in 2023, Halford joined forces with Tracey Collins at Conygham Lodge. The venture produced 25 winners in 2023 and 2024, but Halford has decided to retire before the 2025 season. He expressed his love for the industry and hopes to stay involved in racing in some capacity in the future.
