Mareworthy Launches Broodmare Retirement Network to Expand Safe Homes for Retired Thoroughbreds

Mareworthy Charities, founded in 2022 and accredited by the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, is dedicated exclusively to protecting and rehoming retired Thoroughbred broodmares. Operating from a 60-acre farm in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Mareworthy is developing the Broodmare Retirement Network—a distributed model partnering with local farms to expand long-term retirement capacity for these mares. Partner farms commit to caring for about 10 mares owned by Mareworthy, while the nonprofit covers veterinary and program costs, providing a cost-effective way to ensure safe, permanent homes and avoid kill pens.

Co-founder Kyle Rothfus emphasizes that Mareworthy’s system addresses broodmare retirement from a strategic, industry-wide perspective, validated through collaboration with organizations like The Jockey Club. The nonprofit also runs Horse Husbands Stables, which buys mares at sales, foals them, and donates retired mares to Mareworthy, supporting a “Foal to Forever” program that offers lifetime care and engagement opportunities for Thoroughbreds. While currently focused on Central Kentucky, Mareworthy aims to replicate this scalable model in other key Thoroughbred regions across the U.S.
