ManeGait’s Beacon Project: Expanding Equine Therapy Services for Special Needs Individuals

ManeGait, an equine therapy center, is undergoing an expansion project called the Beacon Project to meet the increasing demand for therapy services. The $12.1 million project includes a new covered arena, horse barn, administrative building, and more, with completion expected in November. The nonprofit has raised $9.5 million so far, with fundraising efforts ongoing.

Founded in 2007 by Priscilla and Bill Darling, ManeGait offers therapeutic riding programs for 150 riders weekly, including GaitWay to the Brain, focused on brain-building while riding horses. The organization also provides a carriage driving program for those unable to ride horses. ManeGait primarily serves children and adults with special needs, with a small percentage of veterans also benefiting from their services.

Research conducted by Texas Woman’s University showed significant improvements in motor skills, communication, focus, academic performance, and more among special needs children participating in therapeutic riding at ManeGait. The organization offers various volunteer opportunities and accepts donations to support their programs. To get involved, visit www.manegait.org/volunteer-opportunities or www.manegait.org/support.
