Major Rescue Operation Saves 70 Rare Icelandic Horses in Devon

A 15-month rescue operation led by The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare, and the RSPCA successfully saved 70 semi-feral Icelandic horses and foals from poor conditions in Devon. Prompted by public concerns in May 2024, the multi-agency effort addressed unmanaged breeding, injuries, and welfare risks by removing the horses in stages, prioritizing the most vulnerable. Additional support came from the Donkey Sanctuary, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, and Blue Cross, ensuring specialist care and rehoming opportunities.

The collaborative operation, described as a significant achievement by charity representatives, highlighted the power of teamwork and expertise in animal welfare. Icelandic horses, a rare and hardy breed in the UK, benefited from this vet-led, carefully coordinated rescue, which concluded by summer 2025 with all horses safely relocated. The charities emphasized the importance of responsible animal management and public cooperation to prevent similar situations.
