A 15-month collaborative rescue operation involving The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare, the RSPCA, and support from other charities successfully saved 70 semi-feral Icelandic horses and foals from poor welfare conditions in Devon. Prompted by public concerns in May 2024, the multi-agency effort addressed unmanaged breeding, injuries, and overcrowding by safely removing the horses in stages, prioritizing those most at risk. The former owner cooperated fully, and no further legal action is planned.
The operation showcased the power of charity collaboration, with each organization contributing expertise, resources, and care to ensure the horses’ wellbeing. Icelandic horses, a rare and hardy breed in the UK, were given specialist attention throughout the vet-led rescue, culminating in their safe removal by summer 2025. Leaders from the involved charities praised the teamwork and public cooperation that made this complex rescue a positive outcome for the animals.
