Lyon County 4-H Council Petting Zoo Brings Joy and Learning to Local Youth

The Lyon County 4-H Council hosted a lively Petting Zoo at the Lyon County Fairgrounds, attracting hundreds of children eager to interact with various animals. Local preschool director LeaAnn Guion highlighted the event’s long-standing tradition, noting that many former students are now involved in 4-H. Young 4-H members, like Daylen Ballinger, emphasized the importance of sanitation for visitors, especially children, after petting the animals, making the experience both fun and educational.

Participants showcased a variety of animals, including lambs, puppies, and rabbits, while sharing their knowledge with the younger attendees. Members like Bailee Van Sickle and Braxton Conrade expressed joy in teaching kids about animals they might not typically encounter. The event not only allowed children to pet animals but also included hayrack rides, enhancing the overall experience.

4-H, established in 1902, aims to engage youth in hands-on learning and development. With around 300 members in Lyon County alone, the organization offers diverse projects ranging from livestock to arts and crafts. Lyon County Extension Agent Travis Carmichael praised the event as a fantastic opportunity for youth to learn about animal care and the various project areas within 4-H.
