Los Alamitos Bans Trainer Ramiro Castillo After Five Horse Deaths Amid Safety Concerns

Los Alamitos Race Course has banned trainer Ramiro Castillo from operating a stable at the track following the deaths of five of his horses in the past six months, two during races and three from illnesses. This decision came after an investigation and discussions with Castillo, who took over a stable in March from Monty Arrossa, previously banned for medication violations. The track has faced intense scrutiny from the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) due to a surge in horse fatalities, including three deaths in a single day on November 23, bringing the total racing-related deaths at Los Alamitos to 18 in 2024, with 11 additional deaths from other causes.

In response to the CHRB’s demands for significant safety improvements or risk suspension of its license, Los Alamitos management pledged to implement stricter safety protocols and hold weekly meetings with state regulators. Track President Cathy Allred has been actively engaged with CHRB officials to address the crisis, emphasizing the welfare of horses and humans as a top priority. The track is committed to making ongoing changes to enhance equine safety amid growing concerns over its recent safety record.
