Lincoln Red Cattle Make a Comeback as Sustainable Farming Gains Momentum in Norfolk

The Lincoln Red cattle, once widespread in East England but critically endangered by the 1970s, are experiencing a resurgence due to their suitability for sustainable and regenerative farming practices. Known for their hardiness, docile nature, and ability to thrive on natural forage, these cattle are ideal for conservation grazing and soil-friendly agriculture. Norfolk farmer Tony Bambridge, who established a Lincoln Red herd at Park Farm, highlights the breed’s efficiency in converting forage into quality beef, meeting growing consumer demand for sustainably sourced meat without relying heavily on grain feed.

Historically developed by Lincolnshire farmers from Viking-introduced stock, the Lincoln Red shifted from a dual-purpose to a specialist beef breed but declined with the rise of imported dairy and continental beef breeds. Thanks to dedicated breeding efforts, the breed was saved from near extinction and now fits modern agricultural needs. Local butchers like Crawford White report increasing demand for the breed’s well-marbled, locally reared beef, valued by consumers seeking honest, sustainable food with transparent origins.
