Kate Holland purchased a ranch in Freeport, Florida, in 2018 with plans to establish a wedding venue, coffee shop, and bistro. Despite successfully opening some of these businesses, she has faced numerous code complaints and challenges from Walton County’s code compliance officers, which she believes are attempts to force her out. Holland’s wedding venue and other establishments have been embroiled in controversy, leading to multiple closures and legal disputes over permits and licenses.
In December 2021, Holland’s request for a minor amendment to her development order was denied without discussion, exacerbating her frustrations. She has had to navigate a complex legal landscape, including an appeal against her wedding venue’s approval, which left it empty for two years, and a shutdown of her pavilion due to alleged permit issues that remain unresolved.
In 2023, Holland filed a lawsuit against Walton County for harassment, seeking resolution through mediation. She hopes for a settlement that would reimburse her for damages to her business and reputation, while maintaining her operations amidst the ongoing legal battle. Walton County officials have declined to comment on the pending lawsuit.
