Leechburg Council has ended its long-standing animal control contract with Hoffman Kennels, known for euthanizing animals, and approved a new contract with Whiskey Acres Rescue and Sanctuary, a no-kill shelter based in Indiana County. The new contract, starting in January, marks the first municipal partnership for Whiskey Acres, which transitioned from a horse sanctuary to a broader animal rescue in 2018. The rescue offers animal control, rehabilitation, rehoming, and training services, with facilities including indoor and outdoor kennels and specialized equipment for safely handling stray dogs.
Councilman Chuck Pascal, who opposed previous contracts with Hoffman Kennels, emphasized the importance of treating animals with respect and prioritizing reunification with owners or adoption. The new contract costs Leechburg $100 per month, saving the borough about $35 monthly compared to the previous arrangement. Whiskey Acres is optimistic about expanding its capacity through fundraising and additional municipal contracts, aiming to provide compassionate care for all dogs regardless of size or breed.
