Juliet R. Harrison, a lifelong horse enthusiast and accomplished photographer, opened Equis Art Gallery in Red Hook, New York, in 2014 shortly after completing treatment for stage 3 ovarian cancer. Her artistic vision focuses on intimate, close-up images that capture the tactile and emotional experience of working with horses, rather than traditional equine portraiture. Drawing from decades of riding and a background in photography, Harrison’s work and gallery emphasize light, texture, and form, reflecting a deep connection to the equine world. The gallery represents over 30 international artists and has become a unique space dedicated to equine art, supporting artists who often lack representation.
Harrison’s journey to opening the gallery was shaped by her cancer diagnosis and remission, which inspired her to create a space that brings joy and support to both the equine artist community and her local area. She began by selling works from artist friends and has since built an international collector base. The gallery also features artists like Ukrainian painter Kateryna Bailikova, highlighting Harrison’s commitment to fostering artistic talent and cultural exchange. Equis Art Gallery stands as a testament to Harrison’s resilience and passion, offering collectors art that connects them intimately with the world of horses.
