Journalism, a 3-year-old colt by Curlin and notable for finishing second in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes while winning the Preakness Stakes, is set to return to racing in the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 19. The ownership group Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners announced that, pending a successful workout at Santa Anita, Journalism will ship to New Jersey for the $1 million race. Trainer Michael McCarthy indicated that while the Haskell is the immediate target, other potential races this summer include two events at Saratoga, the Pacific Classic, and the Pennsylvania Derby, with final decisions to be guided by the horse’s readiness.
Journalism’s participation in the Haskell Stakes will avoid a rematch with Sovereignty, who is aimed at the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga a week later. The Haskell field may also feature strong contenders such as Gosger, who narrowly lost to Journalism in the Preakness, Burnham Square, winner of the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, Bob Baffert’s Goal Oriented, and local runner Bracket Buster, the winner of the Haskell prep race in June.
