John C. Harris, Influential Thoroughbred Breeder Behind California Chrome, Dies at 81

John C. Harris, the longtime breeder and CEO of Harris Farms in Coalinga, California, has died at age 81. Though he did not breed them, his farm raised notable thoroughbreds including 2014 Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome and 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow, both Hall of Fame inductees. Harris led Harris Farms for decades, overseeing its thoroughbred division and other agricultural enterprises, while also supporting philanthropic efforts such as vocational horse programs for prisoners and donations to universities.

Harris was a prominent figure in California horse racing, serving as chairman of the California Horse Racing Board and president of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. His contributions to the industry spanned over 50 years, earning respect for his dedication to breeding, racing, and agriculture. Tributes from industry leaders highlighted his vision and impact, noting his legacy will endure through the horses and programs he supported. He is survived by his wife, Cookie.
