The Iowa Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (Iowa HBPA) has engaged industry veterans Corey Johnsen, President of CJ Thoroughbreds, and Damon Thayer, President of Thayer Communications & Consulting, to develop a strategic plan aimed at sustaining and growing Iowa’s horse racing and breeding industry. Their consultancy will involve collaboration with key stakeholders like Prairie Meadows, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, and the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders & Owners Association to promote policies that enhance racing, breeding, and economic vitality in the state.
Damon Thayer brings extensive experience from racetrack operations to legislative achievements, including protecting Historical Horse Racing and advancing sports-wagering laws in Kentucky. Corey Johnsen is recognized for transforming Kentucky Downs into a premier turf track and pioneering the use of HHR terminals to boost purses and local economies. Together, they aim to leverage their expertise and relationships to strengthen Iowa’s equine industry, protect Iowa-bred interests, and position the state as a Midwest leader in horse racing and breeding.
