In Mpophomeni, Howick, an injured foal with a severely broken leg was humanely euthanised after being found in distress among a small herd of horses. The uMngeni SPCA, alerted by a concerned resident, responded promptly but faced challenges due to the protective mother horse. After careful efforts to separate the foal, the SPCA determined euthanasia was the most humane option to end its suffering. The organisation is still seeking the animal’s owner and may pursue prosecution depending on the circumstances.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about horse welfare in Mpophomeni, where horses are commonly seen roaming near roads. Last year, the uMngeni SPCA raised alarms about an alleged illegal horse race in the area, citing neglect and lack of veterinary oversight, though local horse owners denied these claims, asserting they care properly for their animals and that no illegal racing occurred.
