India has achieved a significant milestone in its animal health and international trade sectors by establishing its first Equine Disease-Free Compartment (EDFC) at the Remount Veterinary Corps Centre & College in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. Recognized globally by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) in July 2025, this facility ensures stringent biosecurity and veterinary surveillance, allowing Indian sport horses to compete internationally while meeting rigorous health standards. The EDFC is declared free from major equine diseases such as Equine Infectious Anemia and Equine Influenza, aligning with WOAH’s Terrestrial Animal Health Code and enhancing India’s stature in the global equestrian community.

This accomplishment results from coordinated efforts among various government bodies and organizations, implementing comprehensive protocols for disease control, hygiene, and continuous health monitoring.
