Thessalon pet store owner Raven Morwood was drawn into a disturbing animal rescue operation after a concerned visitor alerted her to a property in Little Rapids with numerous animals potentially in distress. Upon investigation, Morwood and a group of volunteers discovered a horrific scene at the home of artist Maureen Shelleau, including about 150 dead animals in various states of decomposition stored in a freezer, sheds, and a mass graveyard on the property. Despite the grim conditions, the group managed to rescue several live animals, including foxes, dogs, cats, horses, and other species, placing them in care facilities.
The property owner, Shelleau, known for her work in art and animation, has not responded to inquiries, and authorities including the OPP, Ministry of Natural Resources, and Provincial Animal Welfare Services are investigating the situation. Morwood suspects more animals may be unaccounted for at other properties linked to Shelleau. As of early December, no charges have been filed, but the case remains under active investigation by multiple government agencies.
