Honey Island Clydesdales: The Southern U.S.’s Only Clydesdale Hitch Team and Their Giant Red Wagon

The Honey Island Clydesdales, based at Hickory Creek Ranch in Pearl River, are a striking and beloved feature of Mardi Gras parades and special events across the southern United States. Owned by Clay Harper, this unique six-horse hitch team is the only Clydesdale team in the South and is known for its massive size, distinctive fluffy feet, and a custom-built, oversized red wagon dubbed the “monster truck of hitch wagons.” Harper emphasizes the horses’ individuality, allowing them to keep long manes and tails for natural fly protection, and highlights the rescue stories of lead horses Annie and Nadine, showcasing the ranch’s commitment to horse welfare.

The team participates in numerous parades and holiday events, undergoing extensive training to handle crowds and distractions like smoke and firecrackers, though they notably dislike bubbles. Harper plans to expand the ranch into a western-style village and event venue, recently adding a rodeo arena with bleacher seating. The ranch will host the TNT Wild West Show featuring trick riding, roping, and chuck wagon races, providing family-friendly entertainment alongside opportunities to meet the Clydesdales. Tickets for the show are available online and at the gate.
