A Hawke’s Bay farming family, the Hansens, who have frequently relied on the region’s rescue helicopter service due to multiple horse-related accidents, are now supporting the service by donating proceeds from their spring lamb sales. Sarah Grayson (nee Hansen) shared her personal experience of being airlifted after a serious injury, highlighting the critical role the helicopter plays in rural emergency care. The family encourages other farmers to contribute similarly, emphasizing that donating livestock proceeds is a cost-effective way to ensure lifesaving support is available when needed.
The rescue helicopter trust is urging more rural farmers to join the ‘Heli Livestock’ initiative by donating livestock sales proceeds to help fund the service. Farmers Graeme and Judy Wedd recently donated a cattle beast, raising around $2,000, and local livestock agents like Neil Common are facilitating these contributions. Chief Pilot Charlie Beetham expressed deep gratitude for the community’s generosity, which is vital for maintaining the helicopter’s operations, crew training, and equipment readiness. The service conducts about 400 missions annually, relying on government funding and community donations to save lives across Hawke’s Bay.
