Following the recent death of legendary California breeder John Harris, Harris Farms will significantly downsize its Thoroughbred operation by auctioning off 90 horses between August 14-19 via Fasig-Tipton digital sales. The 330-acre Coalinga farm will be converted to vegetable land by next summer, with remaining horse activities consolidated at a smaller 140-acre property in Sanger, California. The auction includes racing-age horses, breeding stock, and mares in foal, offering buyers rare access to prized bloodlines carefully cultivated by Harris over four decades.
John Harris, who took over the family’s Thoroughbred business in 1981, transformed Harris Farms into a premier California stallion operation, standing notable sires such as Cee’s Tizzy, Lucky Pulpit, and Unusual Heat. His horses achieved significant racing success, including multiple graded stakes winners and over 695 wins since 2000, amassing earnings exceeding $22 million. Harris was widely respected as a pillar of California and national horse racing.
