Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed July 17 as Conservation District Day to honor Michigan’s conservation districts, which have been vital in managing natural resources since their establishment 88 years ago under Public Act 297 of 1937. Originally created to combat soil erosion during the Dust Bowl, these districts have expanded their role to address soil health, water quality, climate resiliency, and broader natural resource management across the state.
Today, conservation districts serve as local government units supporting statewide initiatives like the Regenerative Agriculture Program, which promotes sustainable farming practices tailored to improve soil health. Their ongoing efforts ensure the protection and enhancement of Michigan’s environment for current and future generations. More information about their programs can be found at www.macd.org.
