Gil Ma has been rescuing and rehabilitating farm animals for over 16 years through his non-profit, Farm Animal Rescue, located in West Jordan. Starting in 2009 after witnessing the euthanasia of abused horses at an animal control facility, Gil purchased a ranch to save these animals and provide them with love and safety. Over time, his rescue expanded to include a variety of farm animals such as alpacas, goats, pigs, and chickens. One of his favorite rescues involved eight neglected alpacas, from which he kept Prudence, a hypoallergenic alpaca trained for therapy visits to assisted living and rehabilitation centers. Gil’s approach emphasizes healing not only the animals but also the people who interact with them, many of whom are overcoming trauma or court-related challenges.
After a long stint running a petting zoo at Gardner Village, Gil adapted his rescue model to bring animals directly to people through therapy visits, birthday parties, and state fair pony rides. Supported by volunteers and flexible employment, he balances animal care with community outreach, offering a safe space for individuals seeking connection and healing. Farm Animal Rescue focuses on rehabilitation and rehoming rather than permanent sanctuary, aiming to place animals where they can thrive. Gil’s philosophy centers on making a meaningful difference rather than profit, relying on community support, donations, and volunteers to sustain the rescue’s mission.
