Florida Derby 2026: Key Kentucky Derby Prep Race to Air on Peacock This Saturday

The 152nd Florida Derby, a pivotal Kentucky Derby prep race awarding points on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale, will take place on Saturday, March 28 at Gulfstream Park in Florida. Coverage begins at 6:00 PM ET on Peacock. The Florida Derby has historically been a strong indicator of Kentucky Derby success, with seven winners since 2006 going on to win the Run for the Roses. This year’s contenders include Chief Wallabee, Commandment, and Nearly, the latter aiming to become the first Florida-bred winner since 2000.

The Kentucky Derby itself is scheduled for May 2 at Churchill Downs, with qualifying points earned through a series of prep races across three paths: American, Japan, and European/Middle East Roads. Horses accumulate points by finishing in the top five of these races, with the highest scorers earning Derby spots. Fans can watch the Florida Derby and other horse racing events live on Peacock, which supports a wide range of devices.
