Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) responds to around 8,000 emergencies annually across Herefordshire and Worcestershire, with farmers and agricultural workers playing a vital role in supporting their efforts. Farmers frequently assist by lending heavy machinery, such as lifting equipment for animal rescues and tools for creating fire breaks, as well as providing water bowsers during field fires and flooding. Their local knowledge and resources significantly aid in protecting people, property, and wildlife during emergencies.
Jon Pryce, HWFRS chief fire officer, emphasized the importance of the farming community’s support, encouraging close collaboration before, during, and after incidents. Oliver Surman, Worcestershire NFU Chair, highlighted the severe risks farm fires pose and reaffirmed the farming community’s commitment to working alongside the fire service. Together, they aim to improve guidance and preparedness for farmers facing emergencies on their land.
