Exploring the xTx Project: A Texas-Sized Trail Adventure

Charlie Gandy, a retired 67-year-old who previously served in the Texas House of Representatives, has proposed a grand trail project called xTx that would run east to west across the entire state of Texas. The trail would be 1,550 miles long and pass through some of the most interesting parts of the state, despite not following a straight line. Gandy has studied the Appalachian Trail and is following a similar process of mapping out a route using public roads and land.

The xTx project aims to create a trail that accommodates hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, with campsites and watering holes set up every 15 miles. The project has received positive reception, with property owners along the route expressing interest in participating. Gandy is also involving explorer scouts in the project to work on water hole projects and plans to highlight unique features along the trail, such as bluebonnets and bigtooth maples.

Despite facing challenges, Gandy is determined to see the xTx project through, drawing inspiration from the builders of the Pacific Crest Trail and the Appalachian Trail who were initially met with skepticism. He believes that the project will help uncover untold stories of the land and its owners, and is seeking support from those who are proud and generous to make the grand trail a reality.
