Equine Voices Sanctuary Expands to Rescue and Rehabilitate Horses Facing Slaughter and Abuse

Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary in Amado, Arizona, is a 25-acre refuge dedicated to rescuing horses from slaughter, neglect, and abuse, including those formerly used in the Premarin hormone industry. Founded in 2004 by Karen Pomroy after rescuing horses like Gulliver from a Premarin farm, the sanctuary now cares for around 65 horses, including wild mustangs and horses used in illegal racing. The organization emphasizes rehabilitation and safety, transforming fearful horses into trusting companions, though operating costs run between $60,000 and $65,000 monthly.

To expand its mission beyond Arizona, Equine Voices is hosting the Mystic’s Masquerade fundraiser on October 26 to raise funds for purchasing 17 acres in South Carolina, aiming to create new pastures and increase awareness of horse welfare on the East Coast. The event includes auctions, music, and dinner, and the sanctuary continually seeks volunteers to support its work both onsite and through its thrift shop in Tubac.
