Equestrian Guy Simmonds, 37, and showjumper Lauren Jarvis, 26, were convicted of engaging in sexual activity with an underage schoolgirl in Newport after horse-riding lessons. Simmonds, identified as the ringleader who manipulated both the victim and Jarvis, was sentenced to eight years and three months in prison, including an extended licence term, and must register as a sex offender for life. Jarvis, who has learning difficulties and a low IQ, received a suspended 12-month sentence with rehabilitation requirements and must register as a sex offender for 10 years. Both had no prior convictions and had agreed to keep the abuse secret.

The victim reported suffering from anxiety and depression due to the abuse, describing Simmonds as controlling and Jarvis as manipulated by him. The court heard that Simmonds targeted the girl via Facebook, boasting of his showjumping status, and took steps to avoid suspicion. Authorities praised the victim’s bravery and emphasized the defendants’ awareness of the victim’s age and the harm caused. The judge condemned Simmonds as a serious sexual predator and acknowledged Jarvis’s remorse and vulnerability.
