Dramatic Rescue: New York Police Save Horse Trapped in Icy Pond

A horse named Sly was trapped in an icy pond in upstate New York and was saved by a team of police officers and neighbors in a dramatic rescue captured on camera. The 1,300-pound quarter horse was seen flailing his legs as rescuers struggled to get him out of the water. A group of nine people eventually managed to pull Sly out of the pond, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Sly’s owner, Ali Ernst, who works as a technician at the Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, noticed the horse had fallen through the ice and called for help. She tried to keep Sly’s head above water with a halter before the rescue team arrived. The rescuers grunted audibly as they worked together to pull Sly out of the water and get him back on his feet within a few minutes.

Ernst expressed gratitude for the help in saving Sly and mentioned that playing on the ice is no longer allowed near the pond, as an electric fence has been put up for safety. Sly initially suffered from hypothermia but recovered enough to return home after the rescue. The dramatic rescue was captured on bodycam footage from the Saratoga Springs Police Department.
