Bayou Animal Services and Adoption Center in Dickinson recently took on the challenge of caring for Atreyu, a neglected 10-year-old mixed-breed horse surrendered by its owner. Although the shelter primarily handles domestic animals like dogs and cats and lacks proper facilities for horses, staff worked with the community to ensure Atreyu’s care. He was moved to Dickinson Bayou Ranch, where he receives food, veterinary care, and training from local donors and volunteers. Atreyu has shown significant improvement, gradually overcoming past trauma and beginning to trust people.
The shelter manager, Nina Baker, is also advocating for livestock ordinances in Dickinson to better address animal neglect cases in the future. Atreyu, named after a warrior from “The Neverending Story,” will make a public debut at an upcoming fundraiser as the shelter continues to prepare him for adoption. Despite the challenges, Baker sees a hopeful future for Atreyu, emphasizing his forgiving nature and untapped potential for a new home.
