The new three-part series Death of a Showjumper explores the tragic and shocking death of 21-year-old Katie Simpson, a talented show jumper from Northern Ireland who died unexpectedly in 2020. Initially believed to have taken her own life, suspicions arose when a local journalist questioned the official conclusion, linking the case to Katie’s sister’s partner, Jonathan Creswell—a prominent jockey and trainer—who was later arrested and died while on bail in 2024. The series uncovers the dark realities of violence, coercive control, and secrets within the seemingly privileged horse-racing community, revealing that Katie was raped and murdered.
Featuring interviews with Katie’s family, friends, Creswell’s associates, and investigators, the documentary sheds light on the events leading up to and following Katie’s death, culminating in a high-stakes murder trial with an unexpected outcome. Directed by Niamh Kennedy and produced by Natalie Maynes, the series aims to expose the hidden abuses beneath the surface of the sporting world and will premiere on Sky and NOW from 16 July.
