In France, a debate has erupted over the use of horses for municipal tasks, particularly in Questembert, Brittany, where two mares named Havane and Gladez are employed for waste collection and school transport. Proponents argue that this practice is an eco-friendly return to pre-mechanized transport, while critics label it as a form of “slavery,” asserting that it subjects the animals to distressing labor.

Horse-drawn waste collection has gained popularity in various French towns as a response to climate concerns and urban stress. Supporters highlight the environmental benefits and the preservation of dwindling horse breeds, while also enjoying the nostalgic charm of seeing horses in traditional roles. However, the practice has faced backlash, particularly from local officials who argue that it is inhumane and harmful to the horses.
