The Columbia Falls City Council has passed a new ordinance aimed at curbing speeding by e-motorcycles and e-bikes on city streets, sidewalks, and bike paths. The law permits e-bikes on sidewalks and paths only when operated under human power, effectively banning motorized use in these areas. It also mandates helmet use for riders under 18 and requires adherence to all traffic laws and speed limits. The ordinance was revised after concerns about discrimination against e-bike users and will take effect 30 days after publication.
This legislation was prompted by safety concerns following a serious accident involving a 16-year-old e-bike rider traveling at 40 mph on a sidewalk. The law includes escalating penalties for violations, ranging from fines and education courses to vehicle impoundment and community service. Electric wheelchairs are exempt from the restrictions. Mayor Don Barnhart expressed support for the ordinance, anticipating it could serve as a model for other cities addressing similar issues with electric personal transportation devices.
