Colonial Downs in New Kent, Virginia, is set to launch its longest summer racing season since reopening in 2019, with 44 days of racing scheduled for 2025, up from 27 days in previous years. This expansion is linked to the growth of Historical Horse Racing (HHR) machines in the state, as the number of machines directly influences the number of race days. The Virginia horse racing industry is experiencing a revival, attracting higher quality competition and international interest, signaling a resurgence in the sport’s local prominence.
The season will kick off on July 9, 2025, and will feature the Festival of Racing on August 9, which includes prestigious races like the Arlington Million, Beverly D, and Secretariat Stakes—events that have recently relocated from Chicago. Colonial Downs is seeing strong demand for stalls and anticipates elevated competition, reflecting the broader growth and renewed enthusiasm for horse racing in Virginia.
