The City of Marina is evicting Chaparral Country Corporation, the concessionaire managing the Marina Equestrian Center, due to multiple violations of a 2022 agreement, including poor property maintenance, legal noncompliance, insurance lapses, unauthorized contract assignment, and failure to submit required reports and payments. Although Doug Hatran and a partner took over operations under a new company, Chaparral Ranch Marina, and visitors noted improvements, the city found ongoing issues. Additionally, Chaparral Country Corporation, the city, and Hatran face a lawsuit alleging workplace discrimination and wrongful termination related to animal welfare complaints, which Hatran denies.
The 27-acre property, deeded to Marina in 1998 for recreational use, is now set for a new concessionaire through a forthcoming Request for Proposals (RFP) that may include expanded recreational uses like camping. While the city has encouraged Hatran to apply, he plans to seek land elsewhere in Monterey County to continue offering family-friendly equestrian programs, expressing concerns about potential liabilities if the park incorporates mixed uses involving horses and children.
