China Launches First Undergraduate Program in Companion Animal Science to Meet Growing Pet Industry Demand

China Agricultural University (CAU) has launched the country’s first undergraduate program in companion animal science, responding to the booming pet industry and growing demand for specialized professionals. The four-year Animal Science (Companion Animals) major will enroll 50 students this fall, combining studies in Beijing and Shandong, and offers courses tailored to pet nutrition, breeding, behavior, and related fields such as horse culture. Graduates will earn a bachelor of agronomy degree and are expected to work in pet-related businesses, veterinary services, and equestrian organizations, marking a shift from traditional livestock-focused animal science programs.

This initiative builds on CAU’s prior pilot programs and integrates academic learning with industry internships to better prepare students for the expanding pet economy, which exceeded $41 billion in 2024. Experts emphasize the need for interdisciplinary training and stronger collaboration between academia and industry to meet the sector’s talent demands. Industry leaders advocate for curricula that combine clinical skills, hands-on experience, and market-oriented knowledge to bridge gaps between education and practical pet care needs, ensuring graduates are well-equipped for the rapidly evolving pet services and products market.
