Kate Bennet and Dr Bob Sharp have been awarded MBEs in the King’s New Year’s Honours list for their outstanding voluntary services. Kate Bennet, chair of the Gareloch Riding for the Disabled Association, has been recognized for her dedication to supporting the disabled community in west and central Scotland. Since 2004, she has played a pivotal role in expanding the charity’s offerings, which now include riding, carriage driving, and equine-facilitated learning, benefiting over 80 participants with the help of 70 volunteers.
Dr Bob Sharp is honored for nearly 50 years of voluntary service to mountain rescue in Scotland. His leadership roles and innovations have significantly improved mountain rescue operations, safety practices, and collaboration with emergency services. His extensive research on mountain accidents has been influential in shaping safety protocols across the UK. Additionally, Dr Sharp’s academic career and numerous publications have cemented his reputation as a leading expert in mountain rescue and safety.
