Over a 15-month operation, 70 Icelandic horses and foals were removed from multiple sites due to serious welfare concerns, including unmanaged breeding, high parasite burdens, and life-threatening injuries. The operation was led by The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, World Horse Welfare, and the RSPCA, with support from The Donkey Sanctuary, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, and Blue Cross. Despite no donkeys being involved, The Donkey Sanctuary contributed transport expertise to ensure the horses were safely relocated.
The owner cooperated by signing over the horses in stages, with priority given to the most at-risk animals. Charity representatives praised the collaborative effort, highlighting how the combined resources and expertise of multiple organizations prevented the situation from worsening and secured a better future for the horses. The operation exemplified the positive impact of multi-agency cooperation in animal welfare cases.
