Changes to Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) Classes and Qualifiers for 2025: Mixed Reactions from the Showing World

Changes to the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) classes and qualifiers for 2025 have sparked mixed reactions from the showing world. One of the most debated changes is the new format in the intermediate show horse, hack, and children’s riding pony sections. The intermediate show horse of the year will now be open to horses over 148cm and not exceeding 160cm, with the rider age limit remaining at 25.

The changes have been met with disappointment from some members of the British Show Pony Society (BSPS) council, as the exclusivity of certain classes has been lost. However, others see the changes as a positive step to encourage young riders to participate in showing beyond their late teens. The new format aims to prepare young horses and riders, providing opportunities for novices to enter the ring without the pressure of a ride judge.

Adaptations to qualifying for the children’s riding pony final have faced resistance, particularly with the introduction of mixed height qualifiers. While some producers are concerned about the increased difficulty of qualifying, others see it as an opportunity for younger riders to compete against older ones and improve their skills. The changes aim to expand the geographical spread of qualifiers and give more opportunities to qualify, reflecting the evolving landscape of showing competitions.
