The California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), a nonprofit dedicated to supporting retired racehorses, has awarded $515,000 in grants to 22 aftercare organizations nationwide, including several in Southern California. These grants, part of the Howard “Howie” Zucker Grant Program, support groups that provide rehabilitation, retraining, and placement of retired racehorses into second careers, while also offering therapeutic riding programs, educational opportunities, and volunteer engagement.
In addition, CARMA introduced the Aftercare Partner Badge, a new annual recognition for approved aftercare charities that meet its standards for care, transparency, and operational excellence. CARMA President Billy Koch highlighted a cultural shift among new racehorse owners, who increasingly prioritize responsible aftercare from the outset, reflecting the growing impact of CARMA’s advocacy within the racing community. More details on the supported charities are available on CARMA’s website.
