The California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) has awarded $515,000 through the Howard “Howie” Zucker Grant Program to 22 aftercare charities dedicated to supporting California-raced Thoroughbreds in their transition from racing to new careers. Each recipient underwent a rigorous application and site visit process to ensure high standards of care, transparency, and accountability. CARMA also introduced the Aftercare Partner Badge, a new annual recognition that signals an organization’s commitment to excellence in Thoroughbred aftercare.
These grant-supported organizations provide vital services including rehabilitation, retraining, and placement of retired racehorses, while also offering community benefits such as therapeutic riding and educational programs. CARMA’s efforts reflect a growing awareness among new racehorse owners about the importance of responsible aftercare, reinforcing the organization’s mission to ensure every retired California Thoroughbred has a safe and dignified next chapter.
