Entries are now open for the 2025 British Breeding Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity series, which for the first time includes native British horse and pony breeds. This pilot initiative aims to recognize and celebrate the unique contributions of native breeds to British equestrianism by assessing British-bred horses and ponies aged six weeks to five years registered with Defra-approved native breed societies. Unlike evaluations for sports horses, these native breeds will be scored using the series’ linear system but interpreted with respect to their traditional breed characteristics, focusing on attributes that support a long, comfortable ridden career such as soundness, correctness, and balanced gaits rather than athletic extravagance.
British Breeding director Eva-Maria Livesey emphasized the importance of native breeds to the diversity and heritage of British equestrianism, noting concerns over their rarity and endangerment. The Futurity offers a dedicated awards section for native breeds, with all UK studbooks encouraged to participate by organizing their own gradings alongside the event. The first assessment is scheduled for 24 July, with further details available on the British Breeding website. This initiative highlights the value of native breeds in meeting the varied needs of British riders and owners while promoting their preservation.
